Elangeni was a breakthrough project for the JHC. It was built in 2002, the first walk-up townhouse complex to be built in downtown Johannesburg.
Elangeni stands on the site of what used to be the old Albert Street Pass Office, a significant landmark in the JHC’s drive to reclaim the city that once denied black people a home and transform it to welcome new residents. At this building, the JHC introduced live and work units – a combination of a ground floor work space or shop, opening on to the street, with living accommodation upstairs.
