Short Visit? Let’s Get You Around
Moving around the streets of Jozi can sometimes feel like an overwhelming experience. Especially for a visitor. Which food spots do you try? Where do you buy clothes, arts, crafts, and gifts for loved ones back home? Questions upon questions. Luckily, there are experience packages from a few of Jozi’s local travel and shuttle services. Invest in a good package such as a Caraci Experience if you are visiting for the day. Here you get to explore the city while creating a fashion garment for yourself. Sounds impossible? Check them out and see.
If you are staying a few days or weeks in this city, you may want to take a look at services from the likes of EZ Shuttle. EZ Shuttle has been in the transfer business since 2006, and offers airport transfers & shuttles for individuals and groups. As a bespoke service countrywide, they have transport solutions for individuals and groups as big as 3000.
If you are coming to the city of gold somewhat familiar with it or know which activities you’ll be engaging in, you may not necessarily need chaperoning. This is where the true Jozi culture is learned. It is relatively easy to navigate Joburg on foot, but you may also want to look at e-hailing services or the famous local bus service, Rea Vaya. A little history; 2010 saw the development/construction of the Rea Vaya bus rapid system, which was intended to provide an effective public transit system. On the primary trunk and auxiliary routes, the buses go in separate, designated bus lanes.
A significant number of feeder routes for the buses travel on common streets. The Rea Vaya uses a smartcard payment system. You tap your smartcard onto the validator or scanner as you enter the station or bus, and it taps out at the next stop with the estimated amount (calculated at around $0.5 (R9.62) every 5 km of journey).
If you fancy driving around the beautiful Egoli and want to experience the city of lights, you can try a car hiring service. This way, you get to move around on your terms at your pace. But be careful; you don’t want to be slow on Jozi’s fast lanes.
Becoming A Joburger
If you are coming to this city to live here long-term, you want to look at more practical, affordable, and convenient options. While Rea Vaya bus services work for visitors, many residents of Jozi use the service to get to and from places of work and such. Because Rea Vaya routes stretch all the way to some parts of Soweto, many people use them as their primary source of day transport. The only disadvantage of Rea Vaya bus services is that it is not a 24-hour operation. So you will need to consider something else if you are planning on going to one (or a few, we don’t judge) of Jozi’s nightclubs and places of eating and entertainment. If you are coming down to Jozi with your own set of wheels, then you are in luck. It is pretty easy to navigate in and around Joburg, but remember to stay safe at night, especially at stopping spots and traffic lights. Vigilance is the name of the game when driving in and around Joburg. Keep that in mind.
If you want to be driven around, or maybe want to give yourself a break from your wheels, then you can use e-hailing services or metered taxi cabs. With affordable prices on distances, you can save a few rands while moving around the city. Otherwise, if you are commuting daily, taxis are another best bet. See? It is not so scary finding your way (literally) around the city of gold. It’s the gold you might have trouble with.
Lay Your Head In Jozi
While on the topic of moving around, travelling and transport options in Johannesburg, and which public transport options you should consider, you may find yourself interested in staying or living here. Now, there’s a difference. See, if you want to temporarily experience Egoli, you can take a look at visiting hotels such as the famous Reef Hotel or an Airbnb service. However, if the city excites you so much that you want to make it home, then Johannesburg Housing Company has accommodation in Johannesburg CBD, placing you at the heart of the city so you can feel the full love. Take a look at our buildings and which suburbs we are present in and talk to us about living here. You’ll love it.
