First, Let’s Get To Joubert Park
Getting to Johannesburg, in general, is one of the easiest things one can do in this country. There are a variety of transportation options depending on your distance. If you are outside of the Gauteng province, you have the option to use an aeroplane, bus, or train (if you miss that old-school travel feeling). But, if you are in the Gauteng province and its surroundings, your options open up to buses and taxis. We suggest taxis when possible as they are usually favoured by many due to affordability and convenience. Plus, you can rely on the drivers and marshalls to direct you to Joubert Park.
When it comes to getting around in Joburg, and more so in Joubert Park, it is pretty easy to walk the streets, and e-hailing services are in abundance. There are also taxis, metered and ones at the Bree and Noord taxi ranks, which can take you in and around the city of gold.
What To Expect In Joubert Park
The suburb of Joubert Park may be slightly confusing in that it is named after one of Johannesburg’s oldest parks. So, yes, you can expect a park which in itself is a plus as you can enjoy picnics with family and friends while you enjoy the Jozi scenery. The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is also in the Joubert Park area, and you can enjoy some exhibitions and artistic intelligence offered in this city while you get a glimpse of the culture. Florence Phillips and Hugh Lane came up with the idea for JAG, which debuted in temporary quarters in November 1910 before relocating to its permanent location in 1915. Edwin Lutyens (architect for JAG in 1915) suggested expanding Joubert Park by two times by building a large causeway to cross the railway tracks and incorporate Union Ground (later renamed Jack Mincer Park and currently the site of Park Central Taxi Rank). The adjustments would have put JAG in the middle of a big twenty-acre park. Joubert Park was envisioned as the back garden in Lutyens' designs, while the front park was handled as a cour d'honneur (three-sided courtyard) with formal lawns. A "mixture of grand scale and intimate" was used to design the proposed park. Joubert Park had neither a singular designer nor a singular design, but the cumulative intentions—sometimes ad hoc, sometimes formalised, as was the case with Lutyens’s plans—were in accord that the park should be a place for the conspicuous display of wholesome leisure.
If you are looking for food, you’re in luck. Joubert Park is close to the CBD, and you can easily access malls and shopping centres for groceries, visit Kwa Mai Mai for some meat and braai vibes, or go to Bram or Maboneng for some restaurant hopping and clubbing. The world really is your oyster here.
Let’s Talk People In Joubert Park
Much like the rest of the city of Jozi, Joubert Park has a range of nationalities. You can be sure to find different tribes which will expose you to some good food and new lessons. But, because Johannesburg is usually feared because of petty crime, it is important to employ some safety measures when moving around Jozi. This means day visits to parks, using safe transportation when travelling, and asking for information from people like security guards and taxi drivers.
