Get To Know Our Hillbrow Rentals
Take a look at some of JHC’s Hillbrow rentals and what you can get out of this part of the city.

From being an apartheid-designated ‘whites only’ area to being identified as one of the first gay and lesbian areas in urban South Africa, Johannesburg’s Hillbrow is known for its high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty, prostitution and crime. However, there is beauty, convenience, as well as affordable living conditions in this city, with security measures getting an upgrade every now and then. In this article, we will take a look at some of JHC’s Hillbrow rentals and what you can get out of living in this part of the city.
Studying? We’ve Got You
Johannesburg Housing Company believes that city living should not take away the authenticity and wholesomeness of being with family or a community. Our buildings mostly offer bachelor, 1-bed, and 2-bedroom flats for those who are looking to move as a family, and our Hillbrow buildings are perfect if you are a student looking for communal living on a budget. Take the BonGaliec Mansions, a combination of Bonvista and Gaelic Mansions, which are neighbouring buildings that share the same entrance on Van der Merwe Street in Hillbrow. BonGaelic provides safe, decent housing at affordable rental rates in this popular part of the city, and most of these units are single rooms grouped together (three or four) with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.
Part Of A Family? Let’s Be Part Of Your Home
If you are looking for accommodation that also offers a football field and homework centre, look no further than Roseneath Mansions, also located in Hillbrow. Roseneath has bachelor, one- and two-bedroom flats in buildings of six and 12 storeys. There is a single entrance serving the two buildings, which are run as one complex with a single access point. There is limited parking and some retail on the ground floor.
Another gem to look at if you are moving as a family would have to be Sylvadale, a six-storey apartment block consisting of bachelor, 1-bed and 2-bed flats in the heart of Hillbrow. Sylvadale is part of the Pietersen Street eKhaya Neighbourhood Programme, in which the JHC and neighbouring property owners work with city agencies to keep the neighbourhood clean and safe. JHC owns four buildings in this neighbourhood; the others are Lake Success, Rondebosch and Cresthill.
The Hill-story of Hillbrow
Hillbrow is one of Johannesburg and South Africa’s treasures due to its history. As mentioned earlier, it used to be an all-white neighbourhood of the province as little as over 40 years ago, and with South Africa gaining freedom, it meant that Hillbrow would hold some of the richest history and monuments of the province and country. Take Constitution Hill/Court, for example; a former prison for men, women, and children, it is now the site of the South African Constitutional Court and a symbol of hope and democracy. The site functions as a museum that documents South Africa’s journey to democracy, and it’s one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the city.
No other site of imprisonment has the sheer number of world-renowned men, women, and political leaders (such as Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Fatima Meer and more), like Constitution Hill’s Old Fort, Women’s Jail, and Number Four. These leaders all served time at Constitution Hill (now also dubbed ConCourt), but the precinct also confined tens of thousands of ordinary people during its 100-year history. They were men and women of all races, creeds, ages and political agendas; children too, the everyman and the elite. In this way, the history of every South African lives here.
Food, Fun, and Final Thoughts
The bulk of Johannesburg boasts vast food offerings with flavours from all over the world. Whether you are looking for a taste of Ethiopian, want to indulge in some Italian, or are keen on trying South Africa’s very own Seven Colours, if you live in Hillbrow, you are a stone-throw away from accessing places such as Kwa Mai Mai, Maboneng, Jeppestown, and Braamfontein – all of them offering a range of culinary options to suit whatever taste buds are out there. So, if you are looking for a home you’ll love living in, consider taking up JHC and our Hillbrow buildings and flats to rent. We can’t wait to have you.
