Become a Joburg resident with more culture than anyone regarding your flat. Brickfields, the first central housing development downtown in over 30 years, was built in 2005 on Jozi’s original brickfields.
A Little History
The Brickfields was the initial name for the Newtown Precinct at the start of the 20th century. Because brick manufacturing was the most common way to make money in this region due to the abundance of clay, it was even better if one owned a clay mixer. Around 7000 residents of various races were residing in the Brickfields neighbourhood, subsequently known as Burghersdorp, by 1896. By October 1904, the area had been surveyed, hastily replanned, and given the new name of Newtown. In this bustling commercial district, enormous riches in milling, sugar manufacturing, and food commerce would be created. Today, Newtown is equated with the history and culture of South Africa, particularly Johannesburg. As a result, it is sometimes referred to as the Cultural Precinct.
Brickfields’ WiFi-ready accommodation makes working in Jozi a breeze. The building is in the heart of Jozi’s Newtown, central to some of the most exciting and convenient attractions. Let’s look at a few:
Newtown Junction Mall - located just 400m from Brickfields, offers convenient daily shopping, fashion from local brands, and an initiative by one of Africa’s leading financial services providers, Old Mutual, called ‘AMPD Studios’. AMPD Studios is a space for upcoming musicians to help elevate their careers through music and financial education. Headlined by South Africa’s most influential musicians, Letta Mbulu and Thandiswa Mazwai, AMPDStudios is right inside Newtown Junction, ensuring art through music and financial education remain fused to give artists a better future.
The Market Theatre - Also located pretty close (650m close), The Market Theatre was erected out of Johannesburg's Indian Fruit Market, which was built in 1913, and was founded there by Mannie Manim and the late Barney Simon. The theatre afterwards earned a reputation as South Africa's "Theatre of the Struggle" globally. Its 21 international and more than 300 South African theatrical awards are a powerful testament to its work's bravery and aesthetic excellence.
Bree Taxi Rank - 300m away; this taxi rank is one of Jozi’s most extensive ranks and offers convenient transportation for those who use public transport to get by. If you want to see Bree Taxi Rank in a different and artistic light, then check the work of Johannesburg-based photographer Kgomotso Neto, who once hosted an exhibition in the heart of Bree Taxi Rank which showcases Jozi’s streets and the hustle and bustle culture.
