Our tenants are safe and content in our buildings; outside may be a different story. And just as Makhulong A Matala works inside our buildings to help create a safe, welcoming and clean environment, so we work with stakeholders outside our buildings.
Our neighbourhood and community programmes were set up to bring Makhulong’s idea of a community to the neighbourhood; we work with other stakeholders in the area to keep the space clean and to contribute to the decrease in crime. Makhulong’s aim is to contribute to the improvement in quality of life and to help Johannesburg’s inner city overcome its social and economic issues.
This will encourage other stakeholders to return to the inner city, helping it to be a clean, safe and welcoming region. We want to build vibrant communities where people can live, play and get to and from work safely and comfortably; we are building a place people want to call home. It began with one street in Hillbrow, where JHC mobilised a few property owners who together established eKhaya neighbourhood.
Its impact was so positive that other property owners joined forces with us, and it expanded to other streets in the area. Makhulong works with other property and business owners; building managers and caretakers; City of Johannesburg departments such as Pikitup, Johannesburg Roads Agency, and Johannesburg Metro Police; the South African Police Service and even private security companies to impact positively on the neighbourhood and deal with social issues that affect our communities.
