Makhulong A Matala is a registered non-profit company and public benefit organisation. This means donors who give funding to Makhulong can deduct the amount they donate from their taxable income.
Makhulong provides social services and programmes that are fundamental to the core operations of the JHC – keeping the "social" in social housing. Through our various programmes, we build connections between people to make them love where they live.
On its establishment, Makhulong A Matala received funding from various donors, which was put to good use to ensure that Makhulong became financially sustainable. Makhulong also received funds from the proceeds of a BEE scheme in 2007, which were invested.
The JHC, as our client, funds our operational costs by contributing nearly R5-million a year to Makhulong A Matala. This is augmented by the interest we earn from our investment to cover the cost of running our projects and programmes. We also, from time to time, receive funds from donor organisations as well.
Our funders are (some of them past and others current):
- Johannesburg Housing Company
- JP Morgan
- ApexHi Charitable Trust
- Arrowhead Properties
- Support Programme for Social Housing
- Anglo American
- Government of Norway
