Dorchester Mansions

Corner Twist and Goldreich Street
Hillbrow
Johannesburg
The Dorchester was built originally as a Jewish residential hotel, catering to Hillbrow’s early immigrant population, who were mainly people from Central and Eastern Europe.
As the residential and business presence in Hillbrow – and the wider inner city – shifted through the 1980s, the Dorchester was bought by two Hungarian brothers. They opened an adult club on the premises and, although the hotel was no longer residential, they kept the establishment in excellent condition. The JHC converted it into a seven-storey residential use apartment building. Dorchester Mansions offers tenants a range of accommodation, from single rooms with shared facilities to bachelor units and one-bedroom apartments. The building was refurbished and reopened in 2009.
