Douglas Rooms

Douglas Rooms is a former miner's hostel built in 1906.

It comprised single rooms with communal washing facilities and ablutions. Douglas Rooms was JHC's first engagement with a community who where living in appalling conditions, without water, electricity and sanitation in massively overcrowded conditions. Tenants were a mix of very poor people and criminals. Douglas Rooms was upgraded in-situ, a two year process drawn out by the extensive negotiations with the resident community.
