Within the city of Johannesburg – home to an estimated 3.2 million people
in more than one million households – there is a small but growing population of street children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Many of them are either homeless or live in shelters in the city.

As part of its corporate social responsibility commitments and in support of the Lead SA initiative, JHC has taken on the challenge of assisting vulnerable communities in the inner city. This goes beyond the work that

Newtown Urban Village - next to JHC's Carr Gardens - is being refurbished and upgraded to meet the standards of JHC properties across the inner city. The upgrade will begin from June onwards and when it's completed new tenants will be able to move in to the building.

It seems I've just arrived at JHC and already the traditional December holidays are upon us! I would like to take this opportunity to say how pleased I am to join a company of JHC's standing and to be able to take up the challenge of increasing the pace and reach of social housing development - in the City of Johannesburg and the Greater Johannesburg Metro Area. Social housing is being recognised increasingly for the valuable contribution it is making as part of the country's overall drive to develop sustainable, integrated human settlements.

Hlanganani, JHC's new development on South Africa Drive in Cosmo City, is nearing completion and is due to open in October. Applications for leasing opened in mid-August and hundreds of prospective tenants have already visited the building since we set up a temporary leasing office on site, making it easier for people in the area to apply.

While we are very sorry to see Taffy go, we know he will do a great job in setting up the HDA and opening new pathways for housing delivery on the kind of scale and pace that will answer te widespread need for housing across the country.
